Toconao Twisted Stitch Headband

toconao headbhand

Materials: 1 sk Toconao merino by Araucania

Needles: US Size 7 or 8 needles

Gauge: 14 sts of 2 x 2 rib = 2 inches (in unstretched state)

Size: 22" to fit an average woman's head. If you have a smaller or larger head, simply knit the twisted rib pattern for more or less inches than indicated in the pattern.

Instructions:

Cast on 18 sts.

Row 1: k2, *p2*, k2*

Row 2: k2, *k2, p2* k4

Repeat these rows for 2"

Increase row:

keep 2 edge stitches in garter stitch (i.e. k2 on each end) while over the center ribbing increase by M1 between each of the 2 stitches in a rib (i.e. where you see 2 purl stitches: p1, m1, p1 and where you see 2 knit stitches, k1, m1, k1). You'll have 25 sts now.

Work 3x3 rib pattern as established for 1 inch, keeping edge 2 sts in garter stitch.

Start Twisted Stitch as follows:

Row 1: k2, p3, k3, p3, k3tog but before taking them off the needle, insert tip back thru first 2 sts again and then remove all from the needle, p3, k3, p3, k2

Row 2 - 4: knit the knits and purl the purls

Row 5: k2, p3, k3tog but before taking them off the needle, insert tip back thru first 2 sts again and then remove from the needle, p3, k3, p3, , k3tog but before taking them off the needle, insert tip back thru first 2 sts again and then remove from the needle, p3, k2

Rows 6 - 8: knit the knits and purl the purls

Repeat these last 8 rows for 10".Here is where you can knit fewer or more inches to adjust the headband size. You want the headband smaller than your actual measurement so it is stretched around your ears and forehead for a snug fit. This merino yarn is perfect because of its natural elasticity.

Work rows 1-4 of 8 row repeat above.

Work k3, p3 rib (keeping 2 edge sts on each side in garter) for 1"

Decrease row:

keep 2 edge stitches in garter stitch (i.e. k2 on each end) while over the center ribbing decrease by working last 2 sts of each 3 stitch rib together across the row (i.e. where you see a rib of 3 purl stitches: p1, p2tog and where you see 3 knit stitches, k1,k2tog).

Work k2, p2, rib (keeping edge 2 sts on each side in garter) for 2".
